Getting Facilities on Site When Time Is Against You

There are situations where standard lead times simply will not work. A sewer collapse, a sudden site mobilisation, an emergency shelter opening, or a domestic plumbing disaster that leaves a household without a working toilet — these are real problems that need real solutions within hours, not days.

This guide covers the practicalities of emergency portable toilet hire: what to expect, how to speed up the process, and what the limitations are.

Common Emergency Scenarios

Domestic plumbing failures

The most common emergency call we receive is from a homeowner whose toilet has stopped working. A blocked sewer, a burst waste pipe, or a failed septic tank can leave an entire household without facilities. When the plumber says "parts will take three days," a portable toilet in the garden becomes essential rather than optional.

Construction site welfare failures

Welfare units break down. Toilets block. Holding tanks overflow. And building inspectors do not accept "it broke yesterday" as an excuse for inadequate welfare provision. A portable toilet delivered within hours keeps the site compliant and the workforce comfortable while the is repaired.

Flood and storm damage

Flooding can render domestic and commercial toilets unusable for days or weeks. When a community is affected, portable toilets provide immediate sanitation for displaced residents and emergency responders.

Event emergencies

An event that has underestimated its toilet provision — or where facilities have broken down during the event — needs additional units fast. Every hour without adequate facilities damages the attendee experience and, for larger events, creates public health concerns.

Sudden site mobilisation

A construction project that starts earlier than planned, a film crew that needs a location tomorrow, or an emergency works contract that begins immediately — all require toilet facilities before the standard booking process can deliver them.

What Emergency Hire Actually Means

Emergency hire is not a different product. The portable toilet that arrives at your site in an emergency is the same clean, serviced unit that would arrive on a planned delivery. What changes is the process:

  • Prioritised scheduling: Your delivery jumps the queue. Planned deliveries and service runs are reorganised to accommodate the emergency.
  • Rapid preparation: A unit is selected, checked, cleaned if necessary, loaded, and dispatched.
  • Direct communication: You deal directly with the person who controls the vehicle and the stock, not a booking system.
  • Simplified paperwork: We confirm the essential details by phone and sort the paperwork afterwards.

Realistic timescales

For calls received during working hours, within our service area of Cheshire and Shropshire:

  • Same-day delivery: Achievable for calls received before midday, subject to vehicle and unit availability
  • Next-morning delivery: The standard emergency response for calls received in the afternoon
  • Weekend delivery: Available by arrangement — call us and we will do what we can

We will not promise what we cannot deliver. If same-day is not possible, we will tell you immediately and give you the earliest realistic alternative.

How to Get a Unit on Site as Fast as Possible

Call, do not email

Emergencies require a phone call. Email is fine for standard bookings. For emergencies, pick up the phone. The faster we know about the problem, the faster we can respond.

Have the information ready

The questions we need answered are simple:

  • Where is the site? (Full address and postcode)
  • Can a delivery vehicle access the site? (Width, height, and weight restrictions)
  • Where exactly should the unit go? (Description or photograph)
  • What type of unit do you need? (Standard, accessible, or other)
  • Is there someone on site to receive the delivery?
  • How long do you expect to need it?

If you can answer all of these on the first call, we can dispatch immediately. If you cannot, we may need to call you back — which adds time.

Be realistic about access

Emergency or not, we need to get a vehicle to your site. If the delivery vehicle cannot access the placement area, the unit cannot be delivered — or it will need carrying by hand, which takes time and may not be possible for all unit types.

Check the access route before you call. If there are issues — narrow lanes, locked gates, parked cars — tell us so we can plan accordingly.

Accept the first available unit

If you need a toilet urgently, take whatever is available. Standard units are almost always in stock. If you specifically need an accessible unit, a urinal, or a luxury trailer, availability may be more limited. A standard unit today is better than a specific unit tomorrow — you can always swap later.

Costs and Charges

Emergency delivery typically carries a surcharge over standard planned delivery. This reflects the cost of reorganising our schedule, the priority handling, and — for out-of-hours deliveries — the additional time involved.

We quote a total price including delivery, hire, and collection before we dispatch. There are no hidden charges. If the emergency price is more than you want to pay, you can opt for a standard delivery at normal pricing — but the unit will arrive according to normal lead times.

For domestic emergencies, the cost of emergency portable toilet hire is modest relative to the alternative — which is, frankly, not having a toilet.

What Happens After Delivery

Short-term emergencies

For domestic plumbing failures and other short-term needs, the unit stays on site until your facilities are repaired. Call us when you are ready for collection. We do not impose minimum hire periods on genuine emergency hires.

Longer-term needs

For construction sites, flood response, and other ongoing requirements, we transition the unit onto a standard servicing schedule — typically weekly. The emergency hire becomes a standard hire, and normal pricing applies from the first scheduled service visit.

Servicing

If the unit will be on site for more than a week, it needs servicing. We will arrange this automatically unless you tell us not to. Servicing includes emptying the waste tank, cleaning the interior, restocking consumables, and recharging the chemical treatment.

When We Cannot Help

There are situations where emergency delivery is genuinely not possible:

  • Outside our service area: We serve Cheshire and Shropshire. If your site is significantly outside this area, we may not be able to reach you quickly enough for a genuine emergency. We can often recommend a colleague closer to your location.
  • No vehicle access: If there is genuinely no way to get a vehicle to your site, we cannot deliver.
  • No units available: In rare circumstances — typically during peak summer event season — every unit in our fleet is deployed. When this happens, we will tell you immediately and help you find an alternative supplier.

Planning to Avoid Emergencies

The best emergency is the one that does not happen. A few simple precautions reduce the likelihood of needing urgent portable toilet delivery:

  • Book event facilities well in advance
  • Maintain domestic and commercial plumbing proactively
  • Arrange additional site welfare facilities before workforce numbers increase
  • Discuss contingency arrangements with your hire company as part of the initial booking

But when emergencies do happen — and they will — we are here, we are local, and we respond fast. Call us.
