Our calculator uses ratios based on the Purple Guide (the UK events industry standard), BS 6465, and HSE construction welfare guidance — then adds a margin on top. We recommend above the minimum because the minimum is exactly that: the bare minimum before you are technically non-compliant.
The variables that matter most are guest count, duration, and whether alcohol is being served. Alcohol increases usage by 15-25%. Events over six hours see significantly more use than shorter ones. Female guests require more toilet provision than male guests — the queue time difference is biological, not optional.
For construction sites, we use BS 6465 as the baseline (1 toilet per 7 workers) and recommend 1 per 6 — because a queue at 7am when the workforce arrives is not a good start to the day.
