Practical advice for event organisers and site managers. No fluff.
Both are portable toilets. The difference is in how waste is treated. A chemical toilet uses biocide to neutralise waste in a holding tank. A recirculating toilet uses treated water that flushes the bowl repeatedly. For most event and site hire you will get a chemical toilet as standard — recirculating is the upgrade found in luxury trailers.
Chemical is the workhorse — cheap, reliable, self-contained. Recirculating is premium — looks and feels more like a domestic toilet, used in luxury wedding trailers and high-end corporate events.
| Chemical Toilet | Recirculating Toilet | |
|---|---|---|
| Waste treatment | Chemical biocide | Treated recirculating water |
| Flush | Foot pump (some models) | Button-flush, like domestic |
| Appearance | Functional | Premium, domestic-like |
| Water required | No | No (recirculated internally) |
| Power required | None | Yes (pump + lighting) |
| Odour control | Good — chemical masks | Very good — water-sealed trap |
| Capacity before service | 80-120 uses | 300+ uses |
| Found in | Standard portables, urinal blocks | Luxury trailers, premium units |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
For most jobs, a standard chemical portable toilet is what you want — reliable, no setup required. If the event needs to impress guests (weddings, high-end corporate, formal outdoor functions), a luxury trailer with recirculating toilets delivers the polish. Both are supplied, serviced, and operated by us.
Both are hygienic if serviced properly. Recirculating toilets feel cleaner to users because they look and flush like a domestic toilet, and treated water has better odour control. Chemical toilets are hygienic but more obviously a "portable" experience.
The vast majority of recirculating units come as part of a luxury trailer. Standalone recirculating cubicles are rare in the UK hire market — chemical is the standalone norm.
Modern chemical toilets with regular servicing should not smell significantly. The treatment chemical is specifically formulated to neutralise odour. Problems usually indicate overdue servicing or undersized unit for the volume of use.
