Practical advice for event organisers and site managers. No fluff.
Wem is a quiet north Shropshire market town with a disproportionately famous sweet pea heritage — the Wem Sweet Pea Show has been running for over a century. The town's community events, agricultural surroundings, and steady trickle of construction projects all create demand for portable toilet hire, and we service the area as part of our regular Shropshire rounds.
Wem is a quiet Shropshire market town with a character all its own. The Wem Sweet Pea Festival is the headline — a horticultural show with national standing that has been celebrating sweet peas since the early 1900s, when Wem became synonymous with the flower through the work of local grower Henry Eckford. The festival, held in July, draws exhibitors and visitors from well beyond Shropshire and requires temporary sanitation across the showground and overflow areas.
The Sweet Pea Festival is not just a flower show. It is a full community event with marquees, trade stands, food stalls, live entertainment, and thousands of visitors passing through in a single day. The sanitation requirement is substantial and needs to be planned properly — the right number of units, positioned correctly, serviced before and during the event. We have supplied the festival and know the site requirements.
Beyond the festival, Wem's community calendar is steady rather than spectacular, but no less important. The Thursday market, seasonal fairs, Remembrance Sunday services, and events at the recreation ground and Edinburgh Drive playing fields keep things ticking. Church events, school fetes, Scouts fundraisers, sports fixtures at the cricket and football clubs, and private functions at the town's pubs and halls all generate bookings through the year.
We supply:
Wem sits squarely in the Shropshire Plain — rich arable and dairy country that stretches from the Wrekin to the Welsh border. This is working farmland, and the agricultural calendar shapes much of the area's event activity. Farm open days, Young Farmers' gatherings, point-to-points, ploughing matches, charity tractor runs, and rural charity days all take place on land with no permanent sanitation. The farming calendar creates a seasonal rhythm to our bookings here that peaks in summer and autumn.
We deliver to field locations across the area:
Development in Wem is typically small-scale — individual housing plots, barn conversions, agricultural buildings, and the occasional larger residential scheme on the edge of town. The pace is steady rather than dramatic, but the need for site welfare is just as real whether the project is ten houses or a single barn conversion. Our construction welfare provision covers:
