What changes when the hire runs for months instead of days
Short-term portable toilet hires are straightforward — we deliver a clean unit, you use it, we collect it. The transaction is simple and self-contained. Long-term hires, running three months, six months, or more than a year, introduce a different set of considerations that are worth understanding before you commit.
The hire itself remains simple. But the factors around it — pricing, servicing, seasonal conditions, site changes, fleet management — benefit from some planning.
When long-term hire makes sense
Long-term portable toilet hire suits a range of situations where the need for facilities extends well beyond a few weeks:
- Construction projects with extended timelines: Housing developments, commercial builds, infrastructure projects, and phased construction programmes that run for months or years
- Self-build projects: Which routinely take twelve to eighteen months, and sometimes longer
- Agricultural sites: Where permanent facilities are not practical — farmyards, remote grazing land, seasonal holdings
- Remote locations used regularly: Sites that are staffed periodically but do not justify permanent plumbing — rural workshops, storage compounds, forestry operations
- Temporary offices and compounds: Site cabins and welfare compounds that need toilet provision for the duration of the project
- Event venues and seasonal businesses: Outdoor venues, campsite facilities, and seasonal enterprises that need provision for six months of the year
In each case, the common thread is a need that is ongoing, predictable, and best served by a single continuous hire rather than a series of short-term bookings.
How pricing works on longer hires
Longer hire commitments reduce the effective weekly cost. The economics are straightforward: our delivery and collection costs are fixed regardless of duration, so spreading them over a longer period reduces the per-week average. Additionally, we offer reduced weekly rates on extended hires because the predictable, ongoing nature of the booking benefits our planning and fleet utilisation.
The pricing tiers work broadly as follows:
- Hires of one to four weeks: Standard weekly rate
- Hires of four to twelve weeks: Reduced weekly rate
- Hires exceeding twelve weeks: Further reduced weekly rate
We quote all long-term hires individually based on the specific requirements — the number of units, the site location, the expected duration, and any special conditions. Call us with the details and we will provide a firm quote.
The delivery and collection charge is the same regardless of whether the hire lasts four weeks or forty. Over a long hire, this one-off cost becomes negligible in the weekly average.
Servicing throughout the hire period
Weekly servicing is included in the hire price for the full duration, however long the hire runs. The service standard does not change on a long hire — every visit follows the same documented process:
- Complete waste removal
- Thorough interior cleaning
- Fresh chemical treatment
- Full restocking of consumables
- Mechanical inspection
- Documented visit record
For hires running beyond six months, we add an additional layer of attention. Long-term units are monitored more closely for wear and deterioration. Portable toilets on construction sites take a battering — dust, mud, vibration, accidental knocks from machinery and materials — and a unit that was in excellent condition at delivery may show meaningful wear after several months of site life.
If a unit reaches a point where its condition affects functionality, hygiene, or the user experience, we replace it with a fresh unit at no additional cost. You do not need to request this — our service technicians flag it during routine visits, and we arrange the swap proactively.
What changes over a long hire
Seasonal conditions
A unit hired in May will experience summer heat, autumn rain, winter frost, and spring mud before the year is out. Each season affects the unit differently, and we adjust our approach accordingly.
Summer: Higher temperatures accelerate waste decomposition and intensify odour. We increase the chemical treatment concentration during hot spells and may recommend more frequent servicing if conditions are particularly warm.
Autumn and winter: Rain, frost, and cold create different challenges. Standing water around the unit, frozen waste tanks, and cold conditions that make the facility unpleasant to use all need management.
Winter positioning: If freezing conditions are expected, we advise on positioning — sheltered locations, south-facing aspects where possible, and proximity to heated buildings all help. We can also provide winter-grade chemical treatment that resists freezing to a lower temperature.
Spring: Thawing ground may become soft, and a unit that was stable on frozen ground may begin to sink. We monitor this during service visits and reposition if needed.
Site evolution
Construction sites evolve constantly. The access route that was clear in month one may be blocked by scaffolding in month four. The area where the toilet was positioned may become the focus of the next phase of work.
Keep us informed of significant site changes — new structures, altered access routes, relocated compounds — so we can plan service visits and, if necessary, reposition the unit during a scheduled visit.
Workforce changes
The number of workers on a construction site often changes as the project progresses. Groundworks might involve five people; the main build phase might bring fifteen. If your team grows beyond the comfortable capacity of a single unit (approximately seven workers per toilet), call us and we will deliver additional units on the same hire terms.
Equally, if the team reduces as the project approaches completion, we can collect surplus units and adjust the hire accordingly.
Flexibility on timing
We understand that long-term projects do not always run to plan. Schedules slip, phases extend, and completion dates move. Our hire arrangements accommodate this reality:
- Early finish: If the project completes ahead of schedule, call us and we collect promptly. There are no penalties for early termination.
- Overruns: If the project extends beyond the original end date, the hire continues seamlessly at the same weekly rate. No rebooking, no new paperwork, no price changes.
- Repositioning: If you need to move the unit to a different location within the site, we can reposition during a scheduled service visit at no additional charge.
- Adding units: Additional units can be delivered at short notice and added to the existing hire agreement.
The hire adapts to the project — not the other way round.
Is buying cheaper than long-term hire?
On pure purchase price versus cumulative hire cost, buying a portable toilet breaks even at around fifteen to twenty weeks. Beyond that, the cumulative hire cost exceeds what you would have paid to purchase the unit outright.
But the purchase price is not the whole picture. Ownership commits you to servicing (which requires a waste carrier licence and disposal arrangements), storage, maintenance, and transport. These ongoing obligations have real costs that the purchase price does not reveal.
For most clients, long-term hire remains the better option because it includes professional servicing, consumables, maintenance, and the flexibility to adjust the provision as needs change — without any of the ownership burdens.
